Create New Page & Enter Text
(e.g. Your E-Papers) into Your
Web
Again, do NOT use
these "Create New Page" directions until we get the problem in LIB 117
fixed!! Alternatives: see
Lesson
eXtra Supplement
Step 1. Create a New Page
- four ways:
--Review from < Lesson #1: Views:
Main Frame:
When you first open your web, the main frame of your screen will
display a default
new page (in glaring blank white).
or
--Control + N
or
--Click New Page icon at the top of your screen
or
--Select New Page from File menu at the top of your
screen
A New Page will appear in your Main Frame,
identified by a working partial URL at the top of the Main Frame (e.g.
it will look something like this: new_page_2.htm)
--Position your cursor in the New Page and you are ready to enter
text (i.e. your E-Papers).
--Type something into the New Page.
Step 2. Save and Name a New Page
a. Select Save from File menu or click
Save icon at the top of your screen or Control + S
b. Save As Dialog box will appear and you need to do two things:
--Page title: click Change button. Set Page
Title dialog box will appear. Type in your new page
title (e.g. draft) and click OK.
--*File Name: back in the Save As dialog box,
*type
in a file name and click OK.
*Web
page file name will part of the URL for this webpage, so do
NOT use any spaces. [See Cora for more guidelines.]
Step 3.
Copy-and-Paste Your E-Papers from
Disk to Web
[Now we're going to
MULTI-TASK: I'm assuming that your web, and the new
"draft" web page you've just created, are open.]
a. Insert your floppy disk into your
computer.
b. Open Word [word
processing software program]:
--Click Start in the lower left corner of your screen.
--Choose Programs
+ Microsoft
Word
--From the Microsoft Word File menu, select Open. The
Open dialog box and the Look In field will appear.
--Click the Look In menu, and under Desktop select the "3
1/2 Floppy" to access your disk (or click the up-arrow
icon until you get to the same place).
--If all goes well, your floppy disk will be opened and your disk
contents will appear.
--Open your e-paper document.
NOTE: If
Microsoft Word will not open your file because you created your
document in another wordprocessing software program that Word cannot
translate, then see Cora!!
--Copy the contents of your document - two ways:
.....Control + A and then Control + C (to copy your entire
word document); or
.....Mark text in your document to be copied, click the
Edit pull-down menu, and select Copy.
c. Click on the open Microsoft
FrontPage button at the bottom of your computer screen, position
your cursor at the place in your web page where you want to paste
your copied document, and then - two ways:
--hit Control + V
--or from the FrontPage Edit menu, select Paste.
NOTE: FrontPage will
"translate" your original wordprocessed document as best it
can, but the formatting will not translate perfectly! You can edit
later!! The main thing is that your text is successfully pasted
into your FrontPage web file.
d. Save the pasted text in your open FrontPage
web page (you can edit later!!): Three ways to Save:
--Control + S
or
--select Save from File menu at
the top of your FrontPage screen
or
--click
Save icon at the top of your FrontPage screen
NOTE: If your wordprocessing
document contains images, see Cora!!
Edit Text with
FrontPage 2000
FrontPage
2000 works a lot like any other common word processing software.
For example, you can mark text in a web page and then use the
tool bar at the top of your FrontPage screen to set the font, point
size, alignment [left, center, right], style [bold, italics, underline],
and color of text.
But there are some differences and restrictions to note:
1. WWW
communication conventions understand underlined text to mean a hyperlink.
So to avoid confusion in your web documents, indicate a title
or emphasis with the "I" / italicize or
B / Bold function.
2. New paragraphs:
Indicate a new paragraph with double spacing by hitting the Enter key.
3. Line
Breaks without double spacing: If you want to start
some text on a new line, but don't want to create a double space, then
you need to use a "soft carriage return": that is, hold down the Shift key
and press the Enter key. [Shift + Enter]
4. Spellcheck:
There
are several ways to check spelling in your webpage documents, and
FrontPage 2000 spellcheck works a lot like it does on Microsoft
Word. For more detailed information, see Barbara Klett's directions
(scroll down): http://www.cocc.edu/bklett/fp2000.htm
Work
with Cora's Web Templates
Cora has copied 6 templates using Tables
& Themes into
your new web, filed in "templates"
folder, which you should see in your "Folder
List."
Step 1: Review
each of these Templates
--Single click the
boxed + icon next to "templates"
folder, and a list of pages nested in the "templates"
folder will become visible.
--Double click each of the listed web
files in your "templates"
folder, and review them as possible templates to use in
creating your Electronic Paper web assignment for WR 316.
--To see how each of these templates will look
on the WWW: At the bottom of the main frame screen, note that "Normal"
is selected. Click "Preview"
tab to see how the current webpage template will look on the WWW. Click
"Normal" to go back
to editing mode.
To view the Templates on Cora's web via your
internet browser:

Template
2: [Frontpage 2000 Theme: Radius ]

Template
3: [Frontpage 2000 Theme: Canvas ]
http://www.cocc.edu/cagatucci/classes/wr316/FrontPage/template3.htm
Template
4: [Frontpage 2000 Theme: Corporate ]

Template
5: [Frontpage 2000 Theme: Leaves ]
http://www.cocc.edu/cagatucci/classes/wr316/FrontPage/template5.htm
Template
6: [Frontpage 2000 Theme: Willow]
http://www.cocc.edu/cagatucci/classes/wr316/FrontPage/template6.htm
Step 2: Choose
one of these templates for presenting (one of) your
E-Papers. [NOTE: This is web practice in learning
FrontPage 2000 basic operations. Even if you hate
all of Cora's templates, follow the
steps below. Then later Cora will
help you develop a different one.]
Step 3: Copy
selected template as a (new) page in your web:
(select-drag-copy operation)
In the "Folder List" frame:
--Point cursor arrow on web icon of selected template web file; then on
your mouse, press and hold Right button to mark the the selected template web file;
--Drag it up to your root URL (given at the top of the "Folder
List" frame);
--Release your hold on the right mouse button; then select "Copy Here"
from the short cut menu
-- "Confirm Copy" dialog box will
appear and wait until it finishes. When the FrontPage operation
is completed, you should see a new webfile appear in your "Folder
List" frame, which will look something like this: template1_copy(1).htm
Step 4: Rename
(the copied template) web file
In the "Folder List" frame:
--Right click the file and select "Rename" - this will mark
and box the web filename.
--Type in a new web file name and the file
extension
(e.g. " .htm ") in the box.
NOTE WELL: When
you rename a file or folder in a web using this procedure, Microsoft
FrontPage automatically repairs any hyperlinks to or from the renamed file
(or files in the renamed folder). If you do not use this
method, you may have to redo any hyperlinks in the copied-and-renamed
webpage!!
FOLLOW-UP WEB EDITING may be needed:
--Whenever you rename a file or folder in your web, you are
also changing the URL of that file or folder.
--Renaming a web filename does not automatically
rename the Page Title, so you will need to do the following:
(a) Open the renamed web page;
(b) Select Properties from the File menu;
(c) Title field is usually marked by default, so hit Enter key
(to erase the existing Page Title) and type in the new Page
Title that you want to appear in WWW references. Then click OK.
Step 5: Now
you are ready to copy text from your "Draft" web-file into, and
edit the Renamed web template . . . .
[if we get this far on Tues., April 9, Cora will
give instructions in class.]
Use
Microsoft FrontPage Help:
--Click the Help button
at the top of your screen, and
select Microsoft FrontPage Help from the Help menu, or press
F1 on your keyboard.
--Click on a tab
to select one of these help options:
