Brief Course Description (see also WR 199:ST:Documentation Course Learning Outcomes below):
WR 199: Selected Topics: Documentation is a 1-credit Blackboard-based Online course providing focused short-term instruction in how to construct a bibliography of sources and how to cite in-text summaries, paraphrases, and quotations from these sources, using an accepted documentation style (e.g. APA, MLA, Univ. of Chicago-Humanities, AAA, Univ. of Chicago Author-Date, etc.) correctly and effectively.  This course emphasizes what constitutes plagiarism and how to avoid it by applying college-level documentation practices in research-based term papers and other writing assignments across the curriculum. Instruction also includes how to submit and interpret Turnitin.com originality reports, and use them to avoid verbatim plagiarism.

Mode of instruction: This is a Blackboard-based Online course comprised of several sequenced lessons (equivalent to 10 lecture hours) and evaluated assignments, which enrolled students can complete successfully in 5 to 10 weeks, dependent upon such variables as how early in the term students (who have met the above prerequisite) register in this online course and begin its work, the pace at which students complete sequenced lessons and submit assignments for evaluation, and necessary preparation time that the instructor requires to post/update Bb lessons and evaluate students' submitted assignments.

Most graded WR 199 Assignments will be submitted by individual email to Cora; a few others will be submitted via WR 199 Bb Discussion Board (as directed). One or more assignments will be submitted to Turnitin.com to run originality reports and test for verbatim plagiarism, AND Cora will provide instruction on how to interpret these reports and use them to avoid plagiarism.

Note: You need complete COCC's Online Orientation Mini-Course only once to be cleared to register in Online Courses.

Lesson #1: Plagiarism - Grading Weight: 15%
Completion of Lesson #1 includes required Readings & one graded reading-based Writing Assignment. This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin.com to run originality reports and test for verbatim plagiarism, AND Cora will provide instruction on how to interpret these reports and use them to avoid plagiarism.
Students who successfully complete WR 199 Lesson #1 will demonstrate achievement of  . . .
Learning Outcome 1:  Define what plagiarism is and explain how plagiarism can be avoided.

Lesson #2: Documentation Styles - Grading Weight: 10%
Completion of Lesson #2 includes required Readings and one graded reading-based Writing Assignment.  This assignment will also be submitted to Turnitin.com to run originality reports and test for verbatim plagiarism, AND students will apply what they learned in Lesson #1 to interpret these reports and use them to avoid plagiarism.
Students who successfully complete WR 199 Lesson #2 will demonstrate achievement of  . . .
Learning Outcome 2:
Identify the essential purposes and common types of established academic and professional documentation styles (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago-Humanities, AAA, Chicago Author-Date, etc.)  for citing sources in college writing assignments across the curriculum.

Lesson #3: Bibliography Construction - Grading Weight: 30%
Completion of Lesson #3 includes required Readings, and one graded Bibliography assignment. 
(Graded bibliography assignments may be revised to improve grade: see Lesson #4 below)

Students who successfully complete WR 199 Lesson #3 will demonstrate achievement of  . . .
Learning Outcome 3:
  Demonstrate competency in constructing an alphabetized bibliography of several common types of sources (e.g. standard print sources, as well as online/electronic, field & other non-print sources), for each of which bibliographical entries are complete and correctly formatted according to ONE accepted documentation style (e.g. APA References, MLA Works Cited, AAA References, Chicago-Humanities Bibliography).

Lesson #4: In-Text Citation Practices - Grading Weight: 20%
Completion of Lesson #4 includes required Readings, one graded In-Text Citation assignment, and submission of (Revised) Bibliography assignment (see Lesson #3 above).
Students who successfully complete WR 199 Lesson #4 will demonstrate achievement of  . . .
Learning Outcome 4:
  Demonstrate competency in constructing several common types of in-text citations (e.g. summary, paraphrase, short and long "block" direct quotations indicating any necessary alterations with ellipsis and brackets,  indirect citations from sources, "unsigned" sources, "unpaginated" sources), each of which are correctly formatted according to ONE accepted (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago-Humanities end Notes, AAA, or  Chicago Author-Date) documentation style and clearly matchable to corresponding complete, correctly formatted entries listed in a master alphabetized bibliography of all sources cited in text.

Lesson #5: Capstone Project Applications - Grading Weight: 20%
Completion of Lesson #5 includes review and editing of documentation in one current or previously prepared formal research-based writing assignment (that Cora will supply OR that you can supply if you have one), successfully applying above Outcomes 1-4 documentation skills and knowledge gained from this course.  NOTE: you do NOT have to write a research paper for this 1-credit course!
Students who successfully complete WR 199 Lesson #5 will demonstrate achievement of  . .

  Review and edit documentation in one current or previously prepared formal research-based writing assignment (that Cora will supply OR that you can supply if you have one), successfully applying above Outcomes 1-4 documentation skills and knowledge gained from this course.
