Preface for Winter 2009 ONLINE WR 199 Students:
Recommended Work Schedule & Assignment Deadlines

When this online WR 199 Documentation class was first offered in Spring 2008, I attempted to make it a self-paced course and thus refrained from establishing hard-and-fast deadlines for completion and submission of Discussion Board forum and Lessons assignments. Though many Online students have said that they want "self-paced" courses, my experience teaching Spring 2008 Online WR 199 was that most students were not comfortable with a self-paced arrangement and kept asking me for firm assignment deadlines.  So this second time around offering Online WR 199 in Winter 2009, I am going to establish (strongly recommended) work schedule and assignment deadlines for successful course completion within 10 weeks (i.e. by the end of Winter 2009 term).  .

REVISED Assignment Deadlines!  Since Cora has taken so long to update and post the rest of Lesson #3 readings and the written assignment, work schedule and deadlines must be revised to give students more to complete not only Lesson #3 but also Lesson #4! These revised deadlines will be posted soon!
Why has it taken Cora so long to post Lesson #3 assignments?  Here's the skinny:  MLA (in 2009) and APA (in 2008) have very recently revised (yet again!) their official documentation style handbooks, which contain some significant changes in documentation requirements, advice, and models for citing common types of sources.  Influenced by such APA & MLA changes, other academic and professional entities responsible for establishing discipline-specific documentation guidelines in their respective fields, are also contemplating changes. Fortunately, NOT everything has changed, but enough has changed to render many parts of Cora's carefully prepared lesson documents current the last time I offered WR 199 (in Spring 2008) now either out of date or soon to become out of date!  (I won't even be able to obtain a copy of MLA's newest handbook until early May 2009!)  Advice and models for documentation styles given in textbooks like ours (BR) and others (even with publication dates as recent at 2009) are also, therefore, even further out of date in some respects. Since I didn't want to give WR 199 students outdated advice and models (if I could help it), I've been updating my APA and MLA instructional materials with the latest information I have.  (Technical difficulties with my home computer, Humanities Dept. Chair deadlines, and illness have also slowed me down over the last week and a half - my sincere apologies!)  ~ Cora, 2/6/09

REVISED  Lesson #3 Work Schedule

WEEK #6 (Recommended) Work Schedule: Sat. 2/7/09  - Sun. 2/15/09:

REVISED WEEKS  #7, #8 & #9: Wed. 2/18/09 - Tues. 3/3/09
Lesson #3 Grading + Recommendations for Lesson #3 Optional Revisions
to improve Lesson #3 scores + begin Lesson #4 reading assignments

WEEKS #7 - #9 - Cora's Lesson #3 GRADING Schedule Wed. 2/18/09 - Tues. 3/3/09:

Cora will be grading students' Lesson #3 and sending students' Grade Reports with Lesson #3 Revision Recommendations (as needed)  via individual email.
Please Note Well:
--It takes less time for an instructor to grade students' assignments by simply stating "here's the correct answer," "you got it right" or "you got it wrong," awarding a score (& too bad if you didn't get the answer/s right), and moving on.
--However, what Cora is doing with students' Lesson #3 assignments takes more time--even more than Cora anticipated-- BECAUSE so many online WR 199 students' Lesson #3 bibliography assignments this quarter are evidencing problems following and applying Lesson #3 APA or MLA style advice and models provided in Lesson #3 textbook and Bb-based readings for different types of sources.  Thus, many Winter 2009 online WR 199 students seem to need and (I hope) will want to take the Revision option to improve their Lesson #3 scores.  ~ Cora, 2/23/09

WEEKS #7 - #9  (Recommended) Work Schedule: Fri., 2/20/09 - Tues., 3/3/09:

1. Review your Lesson #3 Grade Report and Cora's Revision Recommendations received from Cora via email
