NOTE: Original graded Midterm Literary Analysis Paper must be resubmitted with Optional Revision

THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS are met:
___1. Manuscript Format for Final Draft of Literary Analysis Paper is typed/wordprocessed and double spaced, adheres to standard Manuscript format (e.g. header, margins, white paper/black ink, standard font/point size, running page headers, etc.)
___2. Topic Choice:
one of the required literary works & authors assigned for ENG 104 study, Wks 1-5: see Directions);
___3. Topic Focus: Identifies, analyzes and interprets how at least two literary elements of the selected literary work of narrative fiction work together to shape its meaning [theme] and impact on readers [see Worksheet, part C; & Literary Analysis Paper Directions]
___4. Length: Topic and thesis are productively focused on a limited number of key points, neither too broad or too narrow for satisfactory in-depth development within scope of recommended essay length: 5-to-6 typed, double-spaced pages--1000 to 1300 words--including separate Works Cited page placed at the end of student's Literary Analysis Paper.
___5. Genre of Midterm Literary Analysis Paper is an essay, controlled by a thesis (Charters 1017-1021), supported/developed with appropriate types of literary criticism (Charters 1021-1031);
___6. Plagiarism is Avoided: i.e. correct In-text citations are given for all quotations, paraphrases, & summaries taken from course & outside sources, and complete bibliographical entries given for each cited source on separate Works Cited page placed at end of  Paper [see Citing Sources Correctly handout].

Competency 10.  Avoid plagiarism by using an acceptable academic style (e.g. MLA) to cite direct quotations, paraphrases (indirect quotations), and summaries taken from primary and secondary sources.

Evaluation Checklist:  ___ = excellent;  ___= very good; ___ = satisfactory; ___= weak

A.  Identify, analyze and interpret how at least two literary elements [see Worksheet, part C] of the selected literary work of narrative fiction work together to shape its meaning [theme] and impact on readers;  Paper productively focused on a limited number of key interpretive points, which are clearly, effectively, and specifically developed (explained, supported, illustrated) in some depth.
___Competency 1.  Define & illustrate principal literary elements of narrative fiction (e.g. plot, character, theme, point of view, setting, symbol, style), as well as significant variations within this genre (e.g. static vs. dynamic character...), using well-selected examples from representative works.
___Competency 2.  Analyze relationships among selected elements of literary form and thematic content (e.g. setting and characterization, or symbol and theme) within a work of narrative fiction, to explain how these literary elements can interact to shape the meaning and impact of individual works of narrative fiction.

___Competency 9. Select & interpret persuasive specific examples from primary works of narrative fiction, as well as from relevant secondary sources, in order to illustrate and support one's points.
Paper suggests active development of these Learning Skills: (a) close reading of literary texts and annotating (i.e. taking notes on) significant passages in those texts; (b) describing and analyzing personal responses to literary texts; and (e) formulating and explaining tentative interpretations and evaluations of literary works--drawing upon logical reasoning and specific examples from the works, as well as other relevant sources.

B.  Integrate and discuss "context" information [see Worksheet, part B] relevant to topic choice & focus, essay thesis & main points, that helps readers understand and appreciate the selected literary elements, meaning, and overall impact of the literary work; Sources used effectively [see handout]
___Competency 4.  Apply background information by and about authors--e.g. their lives, cultural identities, socio-economic circumstances, reputations, literary influences, creative practices--to analysis and interpretation of their works of narrative fiction.
___Competency 3.
  Identify key characteristics of literary historical periods and movements . . . [and/or relevant subgenre]  influential in the development of narrative fiction; and illustrate these characteristics using representative literary works.
Paper suggests active development of this Learning Skill: (c) apply literary terms and concepts, approaches and methods of analysis, and relevant background information, introduced in class and assignments;

C.  Integrate and discuss points made in others' literary criticism relevant to topic choice & focus, essay's thesis & main points [see Worksheet,  part D].  Sources used effectively [see handout]
___Competency 5Analyze others' literary criticism (e.g. commentaries of professional literary critics, interpretations of other ENG 104 students), and apply relevant critical opinions to one's own analysis and interpretation of narrative fiction:
Paper suggests active development of these Learning Skills: (f) actively participating in class discussions and small-group seminars--prepared to explain and illustrate one's own interpretations and questions, as well as to understand and respond to others'  interpretations; and (g) seriously considering, and evaluating the merits and limitations of, others' opinions and evidence--especially those different from one's own; and being willing to re-think one's own interpretations and evaluations of literary works as warranted.

D.  Writing Clarity & Coherence
___Competency 8
Demonstrate effective writing skills when communicating and supporting literary analysis, interpretation, and evaluation, in graded writing assignments;
Paper follows Directions: 7. Writing Goals & Audience; and 8. Proofread and Edit Paper before submission; & suggests active development of this Learning Skill: (h) adapting general academic writing skills to the special forms and requirements of writing successful literary criticism . . . .
