_Length of Formal Academic Summary does NOT exceed 1 word-processed, double-spaced page, using standard font/point size; otherwise, Point Penalty is exacted: _____Topic Choice is one of the five allowed choices: AofA argument essay by Rachels, Pugh, Spidel, Miller, or Grellhesl
_Genre & Manuscript Form Requirements: This is a Formal Academic Summary and follows in-class & handout directions & models (MS)
· MLA Style Header (may be single spaced)
· MLA-style bibliographic entry (must be double spaced & correctly formatted)
· Summary is double spaced and formatted as one paragraph
· First sentence/s formally re-introduce author’s full name and article’s full title, present the topic focus & identify the thesis/case claim of the argument essay summarized
· Occasional author tags are integrated and appropriate active verbs are used.
· Author of AofA argument essay is NOT referred to by first name only.
_Command of Standard Written English Final Draft proofread/edited effectively to eliminate major sentence errors and unclear expression, and contains few other errors in grammar, usage, punctuation, & mechanics.
Relevant (WR 121) Recommended PREREQUISITES & WR 122 LEARNING OUTCOMES (see WR 122 Syllabus):
WR 121 Prerequisites (a) Write [formal assignments] that . . . conform to standard edited English. (e) Use critical reading and writing to analyze and synthesize ideas in an academic writing sample, identifying . . . major assertions [distinguished from supporting details] . . . . (i) Demonstrate an awareness of a variety of [writing] purposes [and genres] . . . . WR 122 Outcome 4: Summarize published arguments . . . [conforming to MLA academic style]
II. CONTENT & COHERENCE Evaluation:
___1. Thesis/Case Claim and Only Major Supporting Points are selected & represented; minor points, details, specific examples are NOT included.
___2. Summary is accurate, demonstrating student’s careful (re-)reading & clear understanding of the AofA argument essay summarized; the main points, purposes, emphases of which are NOT misrepresented or distorted.
___3. Summary is objective: student does not give her/his own opinions on the ideas summarized, nor analyze nor evaluate the writing quality of the AofA argument essay summarized.
___4. Summary is concise and clear: clear, concise paraphrase dominates, and any quotation is used sparingly and effectively; student avoids wordiness, redundancy and weak repetition; however, clarity is never sacrificed in effort to be concise and stay within the length limit. Clear expression is maintained throughout: see also Command of Standard Written English above.
___5. Summary is organized and coherent; main points summarized are arranged in an logically organized fashion, integrating appropriate transitions to indicate logical relationships among these main points and move readers smoothly and clearly from main point to main point. Coherence is strengthened by maintaining clear expression throughout: see also Command of Standard Written English above.
