COURSE PREREQUISITES: EOU program admission as English Discourse Studies Major, senior standing, and consent of Instructor. Successful completion of ENGL/WR 403 is prerequisite for enrollment in ENGL/WR 407.
EOU B.A. REQUIREMENT: All English Discourse Studies majors must develop and complete a Senior Capstone Project, through successful completion of ENGL/WR 403 and 407, in order to earn a B.A. in English Discourse Studies from Eastern Oregon University.
The SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT entails a two-quarter sequence of sustained research, advanced study, and writing on a focused topic in literature, writing/rhetoric, and/or language arts The selected topic should complement the student's program concentration and advance individual academic/professional objectives. As a "capstone" achievement and culminating learning experience, the Senior Project should enable the student build on, deepen and extend, synthesize and apply significant knowledge and skills gained from previous coursework completed toward the B.A. degree in English Discourse Studies (and, if applicable, Licensure in Secondary Education). In addition, CUESTE students will be expected to integrate a significant pedagogical component into the Senior Capstone Project to address the topic's practical (future) classroom applications.
ENGL or WR Prefix Option: Students may enroll in the two-course Senior Project sequence 403-407 with either an ENGL(ish) or a WR(iting) prefix, depending on their program needs and requirements, as their capstone to their cumulative work for the English Discourse Studies baccalaureate degree. Consult your Instructor/Advisor for assistance in making your selection, but as a general rule, sign up for ENGLish if your project focuses on literature and WRiting if your project concentrates on writing, rhetoric, and/or language arts.
Writing Intensive designation means that both capstone courses - ENGL/WR 403 and 407 - entail a significant component of formal and informal writing.
ENGL/WR 403 Senior Project is spent conducting research, developing and submitting for approval a formal Senior Project Proposal - typically 8 pages - plus an Annotated working Bibliography of 15-20 sources;
ENGL/WR 407 Seminar culminates in a formal Senior Project paper - typically 15-20 pages - encompassing the student's critical review of research in the field and independent/original work on the selected topic. Students will also make an Oral Presentation to an appropriate audience of faculty and peers, and solicit constructive feedback as the basis for final critical reflections and self-evaluation.
Grading Basis: both capstone courses ENGL/WR 403 and 407 are letter graded.
