IV. A school librarian is:

1. a "certified library media specialist", i.e., a person that has the library education, training and credentials required to transform your school library to an active learning environment; a person with enthusiasm and dedication to the field she/he has specialized.

2. a person that has the skills and training to select print, non-print, and electronic resources including licensed databases and authoritative free websites that support the school’s curriculum .

3. a person who is also a manger involved with budgeting, reporting, and evaluating the school library program and with the setting of a library schedule responsive to school needs.

4. a teacher himself/herself who is able to instruct students and teachers how to locate, evaluate, and apply information.

5. a powerful support person who collaborates with other classroom teachers in the design of meaningful assignments and other instructional activities.

6. a library professional who attends local library staff meetings and state and national conferences regularly.

Question: But can't you still have a library without having to hire a certified media specialist?  The answer is, NO!  If you don’t have the trained staff, you don’t have an a viable school library program.
