Locating books at COCC and at other Libraries:

Start from the Campus Library home page (http://campuslibrary.cocc.edu/), then under Books & More":

* To locate books at the COCC Library click on the COCC Catalog .

      Try a Subject search: computer science  
   
       or a Word search: computer science and women

* To search other academic libraries in the Northwest, click on Summit. Summit books can be delivered to COCC within two to three days.

Catalog Search Hints

·      if you use a Subject heading search, you need to use the "right" subject terms.   

·       if you use a word search:
     use * to locate endings to search words (truncation)

         ex.  computer*
 

     use boolean commands to combine search words.
          ex. (computer* or information technology) and women
 

Locating articles:

Start from the Campus Library home page (http://campuslibrary.cocc.edu/), then under "Articles & More" choose "All Subjects" to access:

Academic Search Premier
Provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for nearly 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975.

Business Source Premier
Provides full text for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1000 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business.

Database Search Hints

  • start with keyword searching 

  • use * to locate endings to words (truncation)

  • use boolean commands
         ex. (information technology or computer specialist*) and career*

  • full text articles may be e-mailed, downloaded or printed from the screen.

  • other articles may be located in the COCC or may be ordered via inter-library loan.

  *   Start from the Campus Library home page (http://campuslibrary.cocc.edu/), then under
Quick Facts: Encyclopedias, Stats, etc. select "Virtual collections." Click on Librarians' Index to the Internet. 

  *   Try a search using the search word  "occupations."

  *   Once you get a list of results, you may explore:  

         O*NET OnLine  -  this database includes information on skills, abilities, knowledge, work activities, and interests associated with different occupations.  Click on "Find Occupation" and then go to "By Job Family or All Occupations" and select "Computer and Mathematical"
    or 
        Occupational Employment Statistics  - will give you information on wages by occupation. Scroll down and under "Tables created by BLS" click on "2001 National".  Then you may click on "Computer and Mathematical Occupations"
    or
        America's Career InfoNet (ACINet) - you may use this web site to get wage and occupational trends for your selected state and occupationClick on "Wages and Trends" ---> "Computer and Mathematical")
    or
        Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2002-03  - A great resource for employment outlook, educational requirements, salary to expect for most occupations. To find out about a specific occupation, click on the "OOH Search/A-Z Index" link located in the upper right corner of the page.
