Course Description:

This course is designed for students with no prior exposure to formal instruction in Italian. The course will emphasize active communication in Italian and will develop students’ basic skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking, as well as expose the students to the culture of Italy.

Course Title and Identification:

First Year Italian 101-102-103 [4 credits each term]

Attendance And Participation: You need to participate actively—working actively with a partner, trying to teach each other, taking risks and practicing new grammatical forms. Mistakes are not penalized. There will be numerous oral evaluations throughout the quarter, both on a daily and weekly basis. It is not possible to make up a missed class, considering that the course is performance-based.

Written Homework: Every written homework assignment is due at the beginning of class on the due date.

Tests: Tests will be announced in advance. Each test will cover the material covered in class, and of the homework assignments.

Final: A final examination is scheduled for the final week of the quarter. Mark the appropriate date on your calendar ASAP!

Peer Cooperation And Assistance: It is suggested that you get the names, phone numbers and/or email address of at least two classmates who can "fill you in" in case of absence.

Grading Scale:

A =94-100%
A- = 90-93%
B+ = 87-89%
B = 83-86%
B- = 80-82%
C+ = 75-79%
C = 70-74%
D = 60-69%
F = below 60%
