The ridges sticking up from the tracks of this Caterpillar D-4 skidding tractor are called grousers. Grousers allow the tracks to grab into the soil for greater traction. On some tracked equipment which must operate on pavements or other sensitive surfaces, there are no grousers on the tracks.
