This type of harvesting head grasps the tree, severs it and lays it down in a bunch. Because the head does not dangle from the cutting arm, it does not rotate in three axes. It can, however, lean the head forward to lay the tree down.
This type of head is commonly used on full-length tree harvester (feller-buncher) where the unlimbed trees will be skidded to the landing, most usually by a grapple-equipped skidder, and limbed and bucked there. Shown below is a John Deere 950 feller-buncher. this type of machine can cut on slopes of upwards of 40-45% and traverse steeper. It can also cut and carry several smaller trees in its accumulator arms before laying them down into the bunch it is building. There are many different makers and configurations of feller-bunchers.
