Boom of Logs

In parts of North America, booms of logs (also called Rafts) are still used as means of transporting logs to the mills. Major use of this form of transport include the Puget Sound area of Washington State and British Columbia, Canada. Coastal SE Alaska and all the waydown the British Columbia coast also use this form of log transport. Water transport is limited today to coastal waters, the last river log drive having been done in 1971 in Idaho.

Shown below are sorted logs in Alaska awaiting movement by a tug boat. There are several million board feet in these rafts.
