OVERVIEW
The role of the Humanities Department is to provide the College with instruction in the following areas:

a) developmental and college level communication skills;
b) literature and other cultural studies;
c) foreign language.

To meet this role, the 35-member department offers 340+ courses yearly in 7 disciplines:

A.  Developmental Studies
B.  Writing
C.  Literature
D.  Humanities, Multicultural, and Film Courses
E.  Modern Languages
F.  Philosophy
G.  Women's Studies

DEPARTMENT MISSION & GOALS
The Humanities Department pursues its mission in relation to the primary mission of Central Oregon Community College.

Institutional Mission: Central Oregon Community College will be a leader in regionally and globally responsive adult lifelong education in Central Oregon.

Department Mission: The Humanities Department is committed to developing students’ reading, writing, critical thinking and communication skills, and fostering an appreciation of human experience through exposure to the thought, literature, and language of other cultures.

The 8 goals of our Department are related to the Board Goals of Central Oregon Community College:

Goal 1: To maintain teaching excellence within environments productive for learning.
Board Goals 1, 2, 4, and 6

Goal 2: To improve our programs by supporting active professional development, awareness of current research and methodology, and pedagogical experimentation.
Board Goals 1, 2, 4 and 6

Goal 3: To provide quality “service courses” to meet non-Humanities Department program needs, to encourage cross-disciplinary support and instructional collaboration, and to take a leadership role in reading-, speech-, and writing-across-the-curriculum efforts.

Goal 4: To offer a dynamic curriculum, relevant and responsive to a changing world.

Goal 5: To enable students to gain access to higher education, to succeed in their academic coursework, and to achieve their  educational goals by offering effective developmental sequences well coordinated with transfer and professional-technical programs.

Goal 6: To integrate cultural diversity, international and gender awareness into the curriculum,  while helping students develop an appreciation of their own cultural past, present, and future.

Goal 7: To be responsive to district needs and community lifelong learning goals, including service to outlying areas within the district.
