DATE:             May 10, 2004 [Contact info updated September 13, 2004 by CA]
TO:                  All Advisors
FROM:            Stacey Donohue, Humanities Transition Plan Coordinator
SUBJECT:       Changes in Credit Value of many A-/B-listed Humanities Courses
                        & in AAOT Humanities Distribution Requirements

Summary of Changes, effective Fall 2004, as approved by Academic Affairs & Academic Affairs Curriculum:

·        A-listed sequence depth courses with ENG and HUM prefixes in humanities distribution area have been increased from 3 to 4 credits;

·        Number of 4-credit courses within A-listed sequences with ARH (Art History), ENG, HUM prefixes needed to satisfy the AAOT humanities depth requirement has been reduced from 3 to 2 courses;

·        The minimum number of credits (combined depth & breadth courses) required to satisfy the AAOT humanities distribution requirement has been reduced from 12 to 11 credits.

PLEASE SEE LIST DETAILING COURSE & SEQUENCE CHANGES below.

Also please note:

  • Art History: Only two of the following A-listed 4-credit courses – ARH 201, 202, 203, 206, 207 – are now required to complete the AAOT humanities depth/sequence requirement.
  • Survey of British Literature: Former ENG 101, 102 & 103 have been changed to ENG 204 (4cr) and ENG 205 (4cr) to conform with state common course numbering;
  • Three B-listed courses (FA 257, WS 101, & WS 102) in the humanities distribution area have also been increased to 4 credits.
  • What has NOT changed: The following A-listed course sequence options in the AAOT humanities distribution area:
    MUS 201 (3cr) + MUS 202 (3cr) + MUS 203 (3cr) – Understanding Music
    PHL 201 (3cr) + PHL 202 (3cr) + PHL 203 (3cr) – Problems in Philosophy

NEW STUDENTS seeking any associates degree should be advised of credit increase of affected individual courses on humanities distribution A- and B-lists;
NEW STUDENTS seeking an AAOT degree
should be advised of changes in the credit value of individual A & B listed courses, in A-list sequence/depth options, and in the minimum number of credits needed to complete combined A & B list humanities distribution requirements. These changes will be reflected in the new 2004-2005 COCC Catalog and revised 2004-2005 Associate of Arts Checklist.

CONTINUING & TRANSFER STUDENTS (AAOT Degree Seeking) who have already begun coursework on, but not yet completed an A-list sequence with an ENG or HUM prefix before Fall 2004:

1.  If your student has already completed ONE 3-credit course in an A-listed ENG- or HUM-prefixed sequence by the end of spring 2004, advise your AAOT-degree-seeking student to take a second, differently numbered 4-credit course in the same ENG- or HUM-prefixed A-listed sequence (see ATTACHMENT) approved to complete the AAOT humanities DEPTH requirement with 7 credits:

Example (1): Student who successfully completes ENG 109 (3cr) in Spring 2004, may complete the Western World Literature sequence by taking either ENG 107 (4 cr) in Fall 2004 or ENG 108 (4 cr) in Winter 2005;
Example (2): Student who has already successfully completed ENG 202 (3 cr) in Winter 2004, may complete the Shakespeare/British Literature sequence by taking either ENG 204 (4 cr) in Winter 2005 or ENG 205 (4 cr) in Spring 2005;
Example (3): Student who has already successfully completed HUM 256 (3 cr) in Fall 2003, may complete the mixed American Multiculturalism/Non-Western sequence by taking either HUM 211 (4 cr) in Fall 2004, or HUM 230 in Winter 2005, or HUM 240 (4 cr) in Spring 2005.

2.  If your student has already completed TWO 3-credit courses in an A-listed ENG- or HUM-prefixed sequence by the end of spring 2004, consider which of the following two options may be best for your student advisee:

A. Students who have completed two 3-credit courses in a humanities depth sequence, may be able to take a third differently-numbered 4-credit course in that same depth sequenceIn so doing, student will acquire a total of 10 credits in that humanities depth area, but the additional 2 credits exceeding the minimum 8 credits required to complete the sequence, will count as “elective” credits toward accumulating the total 93 credits needed to earn an AAOT.
Example 1:  Student who has successfully completed ENG 104 (3cr) and ENG 105 (3 cr) in AY 2003-2004, may enroll in ENG 106 (4cr) in Spring 2005, successful completion of which will not only meet but exceed the new 8-credit minimum needed to satisfy the AAOT depth requirement in the humanities distribution area; and the 2 extra credits earned will count as “elective” credits and apply toward fulfilling the 93 credit total required to earn the AAOT degree.
Example 2:  Student who has successfully completed HUM 210 (3cr) and HUM 212 (3 cr) in AY 2003-2004, may enroll in HUM 211 (4cr) in Fall 2004, successful completion of which will not only meet but exceed the new 8-credit minimum needed to satisfy the AAOT depth requirement in the humanities distribution area; and the 2 extra credits earned will count as “elective” credits and apply toward fulfilling the 93 credit total required to earn the AAOT degree
.

B. Students who have already completed two 3-credit courses in a humanities depth sequence (totalling 6 credits), may elect to take a one-credit Special Studies capstone course in the depth area to satisfy the AAOT humanities distribution requirement with 7 credits. A special Transition Plan (see below) has been developed by the Humanities Dept., and approved by Academic Affairs, to address the situation of such students caught between old and new requirements over the next three years.  Please review the ATTACHMENT, contact Stacey Donohue with your questions, and advise your students to take the following steps:

·         Advise your student to contact Stacey Donohue, Humanities Transition Plan Coordinator (contact information is given below), as soon as possible to discuss this Special Studies option, as well as other options, for completing the AAOT humanities distribution requirement in AY 2004-2005. If Stacey is temporarily unavailable, please contact Margaret Triplett, Humanities Dept. Chair, or Cora Agatucci, Humanities Transition Plan Assistant Coordinator, for more information

·         Briefly here’s how the one-credit Special Studies option works:
1. Interested students will meet with Stacey Donohue, Humanities Transition Plan Coordinator, to discuss Special Studies & other Options for completing the AAOT humanities depth/sequence requirement in AY 2004-2005;
2. Stacey will assign each Special Studies student to an appropriate Humanities Dept. faculty instructor with expertise in the depth area; and Stacey will ensure that Special Studies student assignments are equitably distributed among available qualified Humanities Dept. faculty members over AY 2004-2005;
3. Student will meet with assigned Humanities Dept. faculty member to discuss, agree upon terms, complete, and sign the Special Studies Approval Form;
4. Student will submit completed and signed Special Studies Approval Form to
Kathy Williams, Humanities Dept. Secretary (Modoc 2nd floor) and receive instructions for registering in approved ENG or HUM 188 Special Studies course.
