Collection 2.0: Collection Development for Learning
Commons--draft VISION
Note: this visionary statement is a draft 'road map' to what Barber
Library collections might look like in the next two or three years and
incorporates several current initiatives as well. A collection
development policy (as opposed to vision) will provide the details--the
"rules of the road", if you will, for developing and maintaining Barber Library
collections.
BARBER LIBRARY COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT VISION--DRAFT
- Students throughout the COCC service district have 24-7 have access to
authoritative, scholarly content within electronic books, e-reference,
electronic databases, e-journals, online maps, and streaming videos
purchased or subscribed to by the COCC library.
- Barber Library's emphasis is on current, readily accessible (electronic
when possible) collections. The library focuses on collections that
invite and encourage high levels of use by its primary clientele--first and
second year community college students. Generally, Barber
Library looks to the Orbis Cascades Summit catalog for access to higher
level items and materials of archival or historical interest.
- Content in electronic journals, e-books and electronic reference works
are primarily retrievable via links in records contained within the Barber
Library online catalog.
- While the library emphasizes electronic collections--especially
when it comes to providing access to periodical literature and reference
materials--we also retain an active, attractive browsing collection of
journals and magazines (current events/leisure/special interest titles and
professional magazines relating to COCC programs and usually not held beyond
five years) and a substantial print monograph collection supporting COCC
transfer and professional/technical programs.
- Barber Library's collections encourage circulation and emphasizes easily
accessible current holdings related to COCC programs and appealing to
community college students; the Library looks to Orbis Cascade's Summit
catalog for access to higher level, archival and historical material.
- The Barber Library continues as an active member in
Orbis-Cascades, providing access to 34 academic library collections across
the Northwest and significant discounts to electronic resources of all
types.
- The Barber Library houses and supports library staff, services and
collections funded by OSU-Cascades.
SPECIFIC IMPLEMENTATION ITEMS FOR 2010:
- After 2010, electronic books held by Barber Library will have a common
platform.
- In 2010, we will explore purchase of a substantial streaming video/clip
collection and are participating in several statewide initiatives providing
access to small streaming/clip collections.
- As a 2010/2011 pilot project, a small browsing collection of
popular fiction will be leased on an annual basis.
- As a 2010/2011 pilot project, a small number of electronic book readers
will be purchased and loaded with popular fiction.
- The library will continue to explore "discovery tools"--resources
allowing students to search across most library catalogs and databases (a
streamlined version of federalized searching.)
- In 2010 the Barber Library will participate in the purchase of an
Orbis-Cascades e-book collection purchase.
