FINDING BOOKS IN OTHER LIBRARIES

SUMMIT/ORBIS CASCADES

BACKGROUND:
You should start all your library book searches with the COCC/Cascades catalog.  Don't assume that we won't have books on a particular subject until you've tried a few searches!

If it does turn out that you need to move beyond the COCC catalog, however, go to the SUMMIT option available from your COCC catalog search (look for the link or go back library webpage link at http://campuslibrary.cocc.edu/default.aspx).

The SUMMIT catalog represents the holdings of the ORBIS/CASCADES consortium.  This consortium currently consists of more than 34 college and university book catalogs primarily from institutions in Oregon and Washington.  The SUMMIT catalog includes the University of Washington libraries, the University of Oregon libraries, Oregon Health Sciences University library, and many more institutions within the two states.

SEARCHING SUMMIT
The SUMMIT catalog works much like the COCC online catalog.  You can search for a known title or author, use subject headings, and use keywords and boolean commands.

Review subject searching on online catalogs here: http://web.cocc.edu/finney/newsubjectheadings.htm

Here's a note on using keyword and boolean searching in the SUMMIT catalog.  Since the SUMMIT catalog is so much larger than the COCC catalog, you will be able (in fact, you may have to) use additional AND commands or NEAR commands when keyword searching.  Phrase searching and the NOT command may be useful, as well.

Review boolean commands and phrase searching at http://web.cocc.edu/finney/lib127/newboolean.htm

ORDERING A BOOK FROM SUMMIT:
When you are ready to order a book from SUMMIT, look for this message:

Click on this link and affirm that you are affiliated with COCC by choosing the appropriate option from the pulldown menu.

You will then encounter a screen asking for your name and student ID number.  The ID number is the COCC ID number that begins with 82....

WORLDCAT

WorldCat is a catalog of most library holdings in North America (and some libraries from other continents as well!)

Use this catalog to find books not available in the Campus Library or through Summit.

Get to WorldCat from our COCC Library  page (scroll way down and choose the WorldCat link for COCC students!)

The WorldCat Catalog uses the same search techniques as the other catalogs you've searched so far (namely, COCC and SUMMIT)...although it looks a little different.  Take a look a the form below:

Please note that this is just a picture of the search form.  Login to WorldCat from the COCC Library Catalogs  page if you want to work with the actual search form.  If you want to perform a keyword search, type in your words within the spaces provided.  See the little pull down menu on the left side of the search form?    Pull down that menu to access the OR command and other boolean commands.

If you'd like to perform a title search for a known title, or an author search for a known author, or a subject heading search, work with the pull down menus on the right hand side of the search form.

See the section that says Limit type to?  Click on the choice of materials you'd like to retrieve.

Books in WorldCat  may be requested via Interlibrary Loan.  But wait!  If you see In your library CENTRAL OREGON COMMUN COL LIBR  next to your item, you know we have the item in the COCC Library (and you don't need to request it!).   If your item is NOT in the COCC Library, however, click on Borrow this item from another library to order the item.  Books ordered via WorldCat can take up to two weeks to arrive.

NOTE: if you are accessing WorldCat from home, you will need to use our proxy server login.  It's easy!  Once you click on the WorldCat link,  a login window will pop up and ask for your last name and your COCC student ID number (that ID number is the one that begins with 82...).  To find your COCC ID, click here.

BEND PUBLIC LIBRARY

Get to the Bend Public Library  link by scrolling down the COCC Library Catalogs webpage or click on this link:  Deschutes Public Library.

You can check any book out of the Bend/Deschutes county library system if you have a library card from the system.  They have some pretty neat stuff.  Check out the kids page, if you have children!

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN

COCC students can submit an inter-library loan request for any book or article not held by the COCC Library or the Bend Public Library.  Find the electronic Inter-Library Loan form by clicking on the 'borrowing privledges" link  from the COCC Library webpage or go to http://web.cocc.edu/library/newlibrarypage/library%20services/borrowing%20materials/illform.html

Inter-library loan (otherwise known as ILL) can take up to two weeks.  Often, however, articles can be scanned and sent to you via the web or e-mail within a shorter time period.
