EBSCO DATABASES
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON EbscoHost:
EBSCOhost databases locate mainly journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, NOT books!
Approximately one half of the journals included in EBSCO databases are full-text, while the rest of the collection includes abstracts (which is a little paragraph about the article).
"EBSCO" is kind of like a brand name--it's the vendor that creates a lot of our databases. Sometime's it's nice to know the "brand name" of a database because most databases published by the same vendor WILL WORK IN THE SAME WAY...so once you know how to use one Ebsco database, you probably know how to use all Ebsco databases.
Here are just a few of the Ebsco databases
we have at the COCC Barber Library:
Academic Search Premier
This database is designed mainly for academic institutions that need access to more
"scholarly" information. It covers a variety of subjects, including
business, social sciences, humanities, science and education. Most probably this is the
main database you'll be using for your college papers.
Health Source Consumer Edition
This database covers nutrition, exercise, medical self-care, drugs and alcohol and other
health care topics. It provides access to health periodicals as well as health pamphlets
and health reference books.
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
This database provides medical and nursing articles from professional
magazines.
Business Source Premier
Covers business, management, economics, banking, finance, accounting and other business
topics.
ERIC
Provides citation and abstract information from over 750 educational journals and related
documents from the Educational Resource Information Center and educational symposium
report literature dating back to 1967
MasterFILE Premier
Provides access to periodicals on a broad range of topics including general interests,
business, health, etc. In other words, this is your access to "popular" type of
periodical publications.
Newspaper Source
Provides selected full text articles from 143 U.S. and international newspapers.
REMOTE ACCESS TO EBSCO
DATABASES:
When accessing COCC databases from off-campus
locations you will be asked to enter your last name and your COCC student id
number. Your ID number (assuming you are a COCC
student) is your 82... number.
COCC ACCESS TO
EBSCO DATABASES: Go to the
Library homepage and
head for the pull down menu that looks like this:
Use this pull down menu to select a subject category for databases. Each subject category lists a bunch of different databases.
Or, choose the all databases
option--to take a look at ALL of our many, many databases!
KEYWORD SEARCHING
IN EBSCOHOST: Any of the Ebsco
databases will
automatically start you off at the advanced keyword searching screen. Type your keywords into
the search form provided.
Ebsco databases use the AND, OR, and NOT commands. Use ( ) to encompass your sets of synonyms. Use * for truncation. Here are some additional search techniques particularly useful for EbscoHost databases:
I can use the wildcard ?
to stand for the a in woman or the e in women.
wom?n and learning
I add in another concept/keyword to narrow and focus my
search:
wom?n and learning and college*
A different topic: the idea here is to locate articles
comparing girls' and boys' learning.
girls and boys and learning
I want to
omit those articles that focus on teaching
as opposed to learning so I use the not command:
girls and boys and learning not teach*
