Job Title and Job Description:

Associate College Librarian, Collections and Acquisitions, my primary
responsibilities include:
2.
Activities
(a)
Primary Assignment—Include
teaching and any course or curriculum development, administrative duties,
advising or activities pertinent to job description.
Library Collection Development
As Associate College Librarian for Collections and Acquisitions, I guide the
expenditure of the Library’s capital budget for monographs, periodicals and
continuations (both electronic and print) and lead the selection of databases
and other online resources.
Monographs, continuations and serials form the bulk of the library’s
$102,000.000 capital budget per year. Databases and other online resources
represent an additional approximate $28,000.00/yr. The audiovisual budget
consists of $9000/yr. In addition, I select for collections purchased from
Foundation funds, typically totaling about $10,000.00 per year.
I coordinate the selection of the following COCC
Library collections according to the College’s curricular and programmatic
needs:
·
Monographs (circulating and reference)
·
Continuations (books and reference items
ordered on a continuing basis)
·
Periodicals and newspapers (print,
microfilm and online collections)
·
Databases
·
Audiovisual materials.
·
E-book and E-journal collections.
As Associate College Librarian for Collection Development and Acquisitions, I
allocate funds to COCC academic departments and communicate with faculty
regularly, encouraging faculty to participate in book, periodical and
audiovisual selection in direct support of their courses. While faculty
are invaluable in selecting materials to support their programs, I perform more
than half of all collection development; to this end, I monitor curricular
developments at COCC and regularly examine bibliographic and review literature
in library and other professional literature corresponding to the College’s
major programs. I coordinate
reference selections with the library’s Public Services Librarian.
In addition to monitoring developments in the monographic and serial publishing
fields, I track the development and marketing of new databases and online
resources. I serve on the Orbis-Cascades Alliance Electronic Resources
Committee and regularly trial new online resources and collections for the COCC
community. I track consortial, regional and national trends in collection
development and analysis via membership in the Orbis Cascades Collection
Development Committee and a variety of publications and listservs.
I
regularly work with faculty and department chairs to evaluate the Library’s
collections for new courses and programs—evaluating, selecting and adding new
periodical subscriptions and databases (as the budget permits), and monographs
as required. Finally, I analyze Library collections as needed to assist
departments meet accreditation reporting requirements.
I
also am responsible for assessing and evaluating the collection, deselecting
outdated editions and formats (example: VHS) as necessary.
I
also manage the library gift book program—coordinating the procurement of gifts,
and evaluating and selecting from all gift materials donated to the Library.
In addition to these ongoing responsibilities,
several specific activities I performed in Fall 2009 to Spring 2010 in
Collection Development are outlined below:
·
Implemented 25% budget cut in collection development—modified all book
allocations and reviewed all periodicals holdings for possible cuts.
Number of periodicals reviewed: 240.
Please see
http://web.cocc.edu/finney/proposedserialscuts0910.htm
for more information. Periodicals review included:
ü
Identifying possible periodical titles for cuts based on use statistics and
prices.
ü
Analyzing database holdings for potential cut titles.
ü
Communicating with faculty and staff
about proposed cuts.
·
While serving as Curriculum Committee chair, I proposed that a series of
assessment questions regarding library resources be added
to Curriculum’s Course Proposal form.
Please see below. The
process of answering these questions will assist faculty and department chairs
with assessing the need for library resources for their proposed courses.
This proposal was passed by the Committee.
·

periodical runs in the Barber Library—ultimately de-selecting issues and
releasing almost two ranges of shelving space for Information Commons
development.
·
Created and began implementation of plan for reviewing and replacing Barber
Library’s collection of 3793 VHS
with DVD or streaming video as appropriate.
Reviewed VHS title by title with Acquisitions/Technical Services staff.

policy plan at their request. See

processing criteria) with YBP
Spring, 2010.
·

electronic representation of all COCC Library items within our online catalog.
In 2009-2010 and years past the COCC Library has shared our cataloging and
