Some Background Information...

The Rio Cotahuasi's sister canyon to the south, the Rio Colca, has been named the deepest canyon in the world (Jan. '93, Nat'l Geographic) although Nacional Geografico de Peru claims that the Cotahuasi is deeper yet. In either case, at approximately twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, the Cotahuasi canyon is an awesome spectacle, the jewel of Peru.
In June, 1994 an expedition of Americans and Peruvians made the first kayak descent of the Rio Cotahuasi in Arequipa, Peru. In June 1995 we returned to attempt sections we avoided during our first trip.
The land of the Inca has always been a lure of the adventurer and it is easy to see why. I have been kayaking for about 20 years and this was my most incredible river trip.
