CH104  Introductory Chemistry I

Performance Objectives

Chapter 8:  Gases, Liquids, and Solids

By the completion of chapter 8, students will:

1.  be able to state the kinetic-molecular theory of gases and use the theory to explain gas behavior.

2.  use gas laws as appropriate to mathematically explain gas behavior.

3.  know the Ideal Gas Law (PV=nRT) and use it to solve problems involving gases.

4.  understand what partial pressures are and use Dalton’s Law of partial pressures.

5.  describe ways real gases deviate from ideal behavior.

6.  be able to name different types of intermolecular forces and recognize how they affect given molecules.

7.  describe liquids and solids by extension of the kinetic-molecular theory.

8.  recognize different kinds of solids.

9.  understand changes of state using the concepts of heat, equilibrium, and vapor pressure.
