Performance Objectives

Chapter 3:  Atoms and the Periodic Table

By the completion of chapter 3, students will:

1.  be able to explain the major assumptions of atomic theory.

2.  describe the composition of atoms according to the theory, including how atoms of different elements differ.

3.  define isotopes and their influence on atomic mass.

4.  describe the organization of the periodic table and use it to get information about particular elements.

5.  relate the position of particular elements on the periodic table to the atomic structure of those elements.

6.  explain electron configurations of atoms using quantum mechanical descriptions.
