"Avoiding Plagiarism" & "Understanding Documentation Systems"

Read/Review these assigned BR chapters:
  • BR Ch. 14: "Avoiding Plagiarism" (pp. 188-195)
  • BR Ch. 17: "Understanding Documentation Systems" (pp. 237-240)
After reading BR Ch. 14 & Ch. 17, everyone should be aware that . . .
  • Plagiarism--whether intentional or unintentional--is a serious offence with serious consequences (see also WR 123 Syllabus);
  • Competent use of an established academic/professional documentation style is necessary to avoid plagiarism; and
  • There are many such academic/professional documentation styles, and our BR textbook devotes chapters only to four of the most common.

Read the BR chapter devoted to your approved documentation style:
  • APA:  BR Ch. 19 "Using APA Style":
    See esp. 19b "How do I prepare the reference list?" (pp. 279-291), and
    APA Quick Reference Box: "ENTRIES IN YOUR REFERENCE LIST" (pp. 275-276)
  • MLA:  BR Ch. 18 "Using MLA Style":
    See esp. 18b "How do I prepare the list of works cited?" (pp. 247-265), and
    MLA Quick Reference Box: "ENTRIES IN YOUR WORKS CITED LIST" (pp. 242-243)
  • IF you are doubling up on a research project for another class AND you are required by your other instructor to use a documentation style other than APA or MLA, THEN see Cora to discuss ASAP!  If your other instructor requires a different documentation style, then Cora will consult with that instructor and provide you with relevant advice and models for that documentation style upon request.
