BASIC REQUIREMENTS are met:
___1. Manuscript Form: Final draft (to be graded) is typed/word-processed, double-spaced, prepared in standard manuscript format for heading, etc.
___2. Text Summarized & Analyzed is one of approved choices given for this assignment
___3. Plagiarism is avoided: Complete MLA-style bibliographical entry identifies text summarized & analyzed; quotation marks set off direct quotations; in-text parenthetical citation of quotation & paraphrase.___Learning Outcome 4 Employ one or more sources responsibly (without plagiarizing) in a summary or another writing assignment.
_____A. FORMAL ACADEMIC SUMMARY: (penalty if exceeds 1-page limit__)
___1. Length & Manuscript Format: No longer than one typed double-spaced or wordprocessed page--including header & bibliographical entry--using a readable, standard-sized font and point size, and standard 1” margins; formatted as one paragraph.
___2. MLA-Style Bibliographical entry--correct MS & complete--placed above summary.
___3. First Sentence(s) of summary formally re-introduce name of author, title of essay, & its topic focus.
___4. Formal Academic Summary Body states thesis and main points . . .
. . . clearly and concisely, with transitions to show relationships among main ideas presented;
. . . accurately, fairly, & objectively, using occasional "author tags";
. . . and student summarizer avoids these problems:
a. Does NOT give opinions about the ideas summarized or the quality of the writing
b. Does NOT repeat or restate points unnecessarily
c. Does NOT use extensive quotations
d. Does NOT include minor points and details_____B. RHETORICAL ANALYSIS
___1. Manuscript Format: Rhetorical Analysis section, appropriately titled, begins on second page [i.e. is separated/distinguished from Formal Academic Summary]; correct running page headers label second (+) pages of manuscript.
___1. Length: 1-to-2 typed/wordprocessed & double-spaced pages (250-350 words): see 2b
___2a. Student demonstrates understanding of what "rhetorical analysis" is, by identifying and explaining key features of the essay's rhetorical (communication) situation and writing strategies;
___2b. Student focuses on a limited number of significant analytical points, and develops/supports these analytical points with well-selected examples from the essay;
___2c. In-text parenthetical citations of page numbers accompany all quotations & paraphrases___Learning Outcome 6 Use critical reading and writing to analyze and synthesize ideas in an academic writing sample, identifying rhetorical patterns, major assertions, and supporting details.
