Donahue, Dick.  "Love and History--A Perfect Match."  Publishers Weekly 248.46 (12 Nov. 2001): 24 (7pp). EBSCOHost Business Source Elite, 2001:  AN [Item number] 5526435.  [NOTE: COCC Library subscribes to EBSCOHost]

Cora's Abstract: While the popularity of historical romances--"torrid romance set against vibrant historical settings"-- has ebbed and flowed over the years, writers such as Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt have increased the popularity of this genre since the 1970s.   Interviews with several "major players" in the market assess "where historical romances are today" and how they got there, in the context of "changes in the books, the audience, the marketing...." This article also discusses:
ø The "Lovely RITAs":  the 21-year-old Romance Writers Association (RWA) honors the best romance books published.    In 1982, the first Golden Medallions (as the RITAs were then known) were awarded, and were renamed "in 1990 for RWA cofounder Rita Clay Estrada, the group's first president."
ø "The Three Faces of Eleanor [Hibbert]" (1906 - 1993)--AKA:  Jean Plaidy, Victoria Holt and Philippa Carr--whose Gothic historical romances have been enjoyed for decades, "the perfect kind of book that mothers give to teenage girls," state Ballantine Books senior editor Shauna Summers.

Goble, Callie (Phoenix, AZ).  Historical Fiction

Romance Novels and Women's Fiction
URL: http://www.writepage.com/romance.htm
Abstract:  Goble offers a "[L]ist of authors who write historical fiction, or nonfiction history, with links to information about the author, books, and other pages of interest to the history fan.
"Historical novels can be carefully researched works where the events are a major part of the plot or lightly researched costume dramas less realistic than a 1940s Hollywood B movie. The trend is toward better research because the readers are becoming more demanding. The authors listed here write historical novels or historical romances. What's the difference? I can't tell them apart. Time Travel historicals have become very popular, so I am listing their authors here and the books in the historical releases. History is history, no matter how the characters get there. Non-fiction history is also listed here."
ø

"A resource page striving to help you write the story while remaining true to the history of the time, place and events."

"History is more than facts and dates, war, battles, and political fortune. History is people--thinking, doing, and dying. Thus, for decades knowledgeable teachers of history have used "historical fiction" to heighten student awareness of the people and the times under study. Historical-fiction is that genre of literature that weaves a fictionalized human story around and through actual historical events and eras. In worthwhile historical fiction the "history" is well researched and accurate and drives the story, instead of being window dressing for the story, and characters are true to their times in manner, dress, attitudes, and ideas. The author generally will write in conversational English that readers today can relate to. However, occasionally the author may sprinkle in a bit of period correct dialogue and vocabulary to add authenticity. Reading historical fiction makes alive dead facts, while at the same time engaging the reader in a story that thrills, chills, entertains, provokes, stimulates, and titillates--just as a good story should."
