COCC requires that students who are certificate- or degree-seeking meet at least once a year with their advisors to obtain approval to register for classes . Students who are certificate- or degree- seeking, feel that they are capable of selecting courses to complete their educational goal, and want to be independent of an advising requirement may request to be self-advised.

Self-advised status is available to returning students who are in good academic standing and can demonstrate their competence in selecting courses by completing the following worksheet. The worksheet will be reviewed by the CAP Center, and once approved, will provide the student with self-advised status for the terms provided. To maintain self-advised status beyond this time, the student can submit the worksheet again.
